How do I resolve domain name transfer and connection issues?

Your domain name is your website’s address. With UENI, you can either transfer your domain to us or connect one you already own. This article explains the difference between both options, expected setup times, and how to resolve common issues.

Please note: Transferring an existing domain to UENI is only available on the Plus or Growth plans. Connecting a domain to your UENI website is available on all plans.

Transferring a domain means moving your domain name completely to UENI, so UENI manages it for you, including renewals and technical settings. Connecting a domain means keeping your domain with your current provider and simply pointing it to your UENI website, while you remain responsible for the domain and its renewal. In short, transferring lets UENI handle everything, while connecting keeps your domain with your current provider and links it to your UENI website.

Domain Transfer Timeline

When transferring a domain between registrars, it typically takes 7–10 days for the process to complete. This timeline may vary depending on the policies of the current registrar and any required verification steps. During this period, your domain name and any associated e-mail addresses might experience some downtime. Once the domain transfer is marked as complete, additional time may be required for DNS propagation. This process ensures that the domain is fully integrated across all DNS servers worldwide and can take up to 72 hours.

Nameserver Updates and DNS Propagation

Updating Nameservers

To connect your existing domain name to UENI, your domain's nameservers must be updated to the ones received via e-mail after initiating the connection process. This involves logging into your domain registrar account, removing any existing non-UENI nameservers, and adding UENI’s required nameservers.

Ensure you save these changes to your registrar account.

Propagation Time

After updating the nameservers, allow up to 24–72 hours for DNS changes to propagate. During this period, your domain’s connection to your website should gradually take effect and become accessible worldwide.

Common Troubleshooting Steps

If your domain connection is still pending or you experience delays beyond the standard 72-hour propagation window, consider the following steps:

  1. Check that the nameservers are set correctly at your domain registrar. Ensure only the required nameservers ( UENI nameservers) are active. Remove any additional or non-UENI nameservers.

  2. Once updated, confirm that the changes are saved.

  3. Wait for DNS propagation to occur. This can take up to 72 hours.

Additionally, verify the spelling and formatting of the nameserver entries.
