Take payments for your bookings: how to configure your payment & booking options

Charge customers when they book a service — before the appointment (Pay upfront) or after (Pay later) — plus automatic booking confirmation.

Please note: this feature is only available to customers on our Plus and Growth plans. If you haven't upgraded your plan yet, click here, or reach out to us.

You can now collect payment for your service bookings — either before the appointment (Pay upfront) or after it (Pay later). No more chasing customers separately: the booking and the payment happen in one place.

This guide covers how to set it up, what your customers see, and how to manage payments from your Hub.

Before you start: to charge for a booking you need a connected payment method — Stripe, Square or PayPal. Without one, your services can only be set to Free. You can connect a payment method in Editor > Settings > Payment Methods.

Choose a payment option for each service

Each service you offer can have its own payment setting. When a service is set to be bookable and shown on your UENI page, you'll see a new Payment options section with four choices:

  • Free — no payment is taken. This is the default and is always available.

  • Pay upfront — the customer pays while they book, before the appointment.

  • Pay later — the customer books now and pays afterwards.

  • Pay upfront or later — the customer chooses which they prefer.

Note: The three paid options only appear once you've connected a payment method. Until then they're greyed out with an Activate payment methods button that takes you straight to the right place.

Turn on automatic booking confirmation

Normally you approve each booking by hand. With Automatic Booking Confirmation, bookings confirm themselves the moment they come in — no manual step. This is what makes paid bookings feel instant.

  1. Open your website in the Editor.

  2. Go to Settings > Booking Settings.

  3. Switch on Auto Booking Confirmation.

This sets the default for your whole business, and you can override it on any individual service. When it's on, new bookings appear as Confirmed in your Hub right away.

What your customers see

Pay upfront. The customer picks a service, date and time, enters their details, and the final button becomes Pay & confirm. They're taken to a secure checkout page to pay, then straight to the confirmation. Their booking shows as Paid.

Pay later. The customer books as usual with no payment step. You collect payment afterwards — either by sending a payment request from your Hub, or the customer pays from the Pay now button in their confirmation email. You can also take payment directly — in cash, by bank transfer, or in person — and mark the booking as Paid from your hub (see below). That way every sale is recorded and your analytics stay accurate.

Pay upfront or later. The customer sees both a Pay now and a Pay later button and picks whichever suits them.

Good to know — the 10‑minute hold: when you use automatic confirmation together with Pay upfront, the time slot is held for the customer for 10 minutes while they pay. If they pay in time, the booking is confirmed. If they don't, the slot is released and becomes available for other customers again — so you never lose a slot to someone who didn't complete payment.

Manage payments from your Hub

Your bookings list now shows a Payment status for every booking:

  • Paid — payment received.

  • Unpaid — no payment yet.

  • Pending — the customer still needs to pay before the booking is confirmed.

From here you can:

  • Send a payment request — for any unpaid booking (as long as you have a payment method connected). This emails the customer a link to pay.

  • Confirm with payment request — when you confirm a booking, you can choose to confirm it only after the customer has paid. They get an email with a pay link, and the booking confirms once payment lands.

  • Mark as paid / unpaid — update the status manually, including in bulk. Use this whenever a customer pays you directly — for example in cash, by bank transfer, or in person — so the booking is recorded as Paid. It doesn't charge anyone, but keeping statuses up to date is important: your Hub uses them to show accurate sales and revenue analytics, so a payment you took offline still counts.

Emails

Your booking emails now include payment information automatically:

  • Paid bookings include an order summary.

  • Unpaid bookings that can be paid later include a Pay now button that takes the customer to the checkout page.

  • Your own owner emails show whether each booking is Paid or Unpaid.

If you remove your payment method

If you disconnect your payment method (Stripe, Square or PayPal), all of your services go back to the default Free behaviour:

  • Customers can no longer pay for a booking — the Pay upfront and Pay later options are removed.

  • Every booking behaves like a free booking: it is simply requested, or automatically confirmed if you have Automatic Booking Confirmation switched on.

To take paid bookings again, reconnect a payment method and choose the payment option again on each service.

Tip: For the smoothest experience, connect a payment method, turn on Automatic Booking Confirmation, and set your most popular services to Pay upfront. Customers pay as they book, and confirmed appointments land straight in your calendar.
